2 killed and 1 injured due to tire blast at Delta Airlines facility

An explosion of tires at the Atlanta Delta Air Lines maintenance facility caused the death of two workers and led to injuring one of them in the incident.

In an accident on Tuesday at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, two workers were killed in the explosion of a tire. The explosion happened at the Delta Air Lines maintenance facility at the airport when the wheel components were disassembled for the maintenance of the wheel and the brake shoe. The airline has also confirmed that no parts were attached to the plane.

The Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration said that they have started an investigation into this issue. The airline has also mentioned that they have been looking for the reason for the explosion. They have also said, "The Delta family is heartbroken at the loss of two members and the injury of another following an incident this morning at the Atlanta Technical Operations Maintenance facility. We have extended our full support to family members and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time."

Shortly after around five in the morning, a number of Atlanta Police and fire department available rushed to the maintenance hangar closed to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, as per the Atlanta Journal- Constitution. Both the airport and Delta Air Lines said that there was no as such impact on flights or its maintenance operations.

The Clayton County Medical Examiner's Office identified the victims as 37 year old Luis Aldarondo of Newnan, Georgia, and 58 year old Mirko F Marweg of Stone Mountain, Georgia. The aviation industry has been shocked by the death of these tow seasoned Delta workers.

As quoted by NYT, one of the workers mentioned about the incident saying, "I walked toward where the explosion occurred and saw a body lying face down, not moving, with blood all around."

Even though Delta Air Lines has acknowledged the tragedy, it has not yet disclosed the reason of the explosion. The authorities from the airline are trying to identify the reason what caused the explosion which took lives away. While investigating that they were aware of the matter, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) directed questions to the airline for inquiries.

The incident however, did not hamper the flight services of Delta Air Lines from or to Atlanta International Airport. The flight operations did not even get interrupted due to the incident. The employees were working in the facility's wheel and brake shop.
