Local Christmas travelers will get a $1,000 duty-free allowance

Cayman is a British Overseas Territory situated in the Western Caribbean Sea. It comprises Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, and Cayman Brac. As per the report, the decision was taken in the last week held cabinet under the "Customs Tariff Regulations," which allows travelers returning to Cayman by air until 6th January 2025 to get access to an increase in the previous duty-free allowance. 

In addition, Dwayne Seymour, the border control minister, said the tax break was intended to "enhance the quality of life for Caymanians." 

He also added, "By approving a temporary increase in duty allowances, this measure will help ease the financial burden for individuals and families planning holiday travel, especially those who might struggle to cover additional duty costs."

He further stated, "We extend our gratitude to our Premier for supporting this initiative, which aligns with the Government's overarching goal of enhancing the quality of life for Caymanians," said Border Control Minister Dwayne Seymour, who added that this was to help those struggling with duty costs."

Moreover, from 1 December to 6 January, local Cayman overseas travelers will be allowed to bring in duty-free, dutiable personal and household goods up to CI $1000. But, concerning the dutiable items that exceed this temporarily established $1000 duty-free allowance, they should always be addressed or declared on the Customs and Border Control (CBC) form directly to an officer at CBC upon arrival on the Cayman Islands. 

On the other hand, returning Cayman residents are strictly advised that the duty-free allowance will not apply to merchandise purchased for resale in their business. However, such items should always be declared, and the applicable amount of duty for such items should be paid accordingly. 

A government spokeswoman warned that goods over the temporary limit would have to be declared as usual.

Further, she said, "If a CBC officer suspects that a passenger has either failed to declare items that should be declared, has made a false declaration, or is otherwise engaged in the smuggling of contraband, the passenger will be subject to questioning and search by the officer."

According to the government's perspective or any official statement, "how much revenue it anticipates" has not been stated.

In accordance with the $1000 duty-free allowance, local travelers from Cayman Island will be able to access shopping services and other benefits, but the travelers should always have the proper assistance in terms of getting checked with the duty-free items accordingly.
